Late afternoon yesterday, I made an appointment with Dr. Perera for 11:30 today.
I told her that, every morning while in the bathroom, I got truly scared thinking that that horrifying faint would come to me again. She asked me, if my heartbeat became faster or slower when the faint scene came back. I said “faster.”
She explains that faint is caused by an insufficient blood flow to the brain, and if my heartbeat gets faster, that means my heart is pumping more blood to the brain. So, it is not a sign of faint coming. Quite logical.
To her question: “How’s Q,” I answered “unusual as usual.”

After leaving the clinic, I dropped by Kinokuniya, as I often do. Partly reassured and partly frustrated (with what? Perhaps with myself), I got four books and at HMV two DVDs. The books are all by Yamasaki Toyoko (山崎豊子). After a small meal, I moved on to Liang Court Kinokuniya and got the last (5th) volume of “Shiroi Kyoto’o (「白い巨塔」),” which I’ve not finished yet.In the Chapter 7, “Chi no Akashi (「血の証し」),” of the 1st volume of “Futatsu no Sokoku (「二つの祖国」),” where in Washington DC, the Nisei protagonist, Amoh Kenji (天羽賢治) translated an important Japanese message (in the dialect of his parents) on atomic bomb development to English, Yamazaki wrote “Capital Hill (キャピタル・ヒル).” Of course, it must be “Capitol Hill (キャピトル・ヒル).”
Meanwhile, I’ve finished the first volume of “Daichi no Ko (「大地の子」)” and already started the second. I remember that Ohara-san, who was really nice to me in Osaka and even tried to arrange marriage for me, was talking about this series. No wonder that he was interested in it. In the second volume, the story goes on about steel production in China and the Chinese leadership turns to Japanese large steel companies for assistance.

実名を伏せて登場するが、それぞれ「鄧小平」「華国鋒」「胡耀邦」「新日本製鉄」「（おそらく）三菱商事」、他に先駆けてコンピューター化を導入した「新日鉄君津製鉄所」「趙紫陽」「李先念」のことと思われる。当時、存命だったことから似せた名にしたのだろう。
圧延工場の様子も書かれていて、自分も懐かしい気分にさせられる。

眼を光らせた。
『はい、あれは日本の東洋製鉄が建設した製鉄所です』」
との一節もある。

「二つの祖国」にしても「大地の子」にしても、日本人の両親の子として生まれながら、異国で育ったが故に差別と二国（日米、日中）に引き裂かれる思いは共通する主題。そういう自分も、成人するまで日本しか知らない日本人でありながら、日本人だという理由で物事を押し通す自分を嫌う部分が存在することを認めざるを得ない。ただし、数日前に書いたように、それは日本人であることを全く否定することではなく、あくまでも国籍、人種にこだわらない個人レベルで人を判断することが大前提だと何度でも強調したい……のだが、それが戦時だとしたら……。「二つの祖国」に出てくる死体解剖の場面は、「白い巨塔」の場面とよく似ている。

数日前、電子レンジがＬＧ製からシャープ製の新品に変わっていた。何でだろう？ＬＧレンジに何の問題もなかったのに。ＬＧレンジの方が使いやすかったのに。理由もなく故障する前に耐久消費財を買い換える意識は理解できない。まだ十分走るクルマを買い換える意識だろうか？新品に買い換えて、自分がよろこぶとでも思っているのだろうか？「壊れるまで使う。壊れたら修理代と新品購入代を勘案する」。自分にとっては、これが美しいのだけど。そして、今日うちに帰ると、ランドリーハンガーが風で破壊されていた。このハンガーは、翻訳会社に務めていたときに知り合って、出張を終えて帰国するＮＴＴエンジニアの伊藤さんからいただいたもの。この方角の窓は最近になってＱが開け始めた。なぜそうし始めたのか、全く不明。今日の強風で壊れてしまった。瞬間接着剤で修理するので、「ステルナ」と記しておく。でなければ、Ｑは何でも捨ててしまう。
