Sophie's Choice, Tatlock, Bohr, Ortega...

“Sophie’s Choice” の著者、William Styron が３日前に亡くなった。もっと早く読んどけばよかった。今日、ジムのあと紀伊國屋に行こうとしたけど時間が遅すぎたので、DVD だけでも見ておこうと思ってHMV に行ったけど見つからなかった。Borders に行けばよかったと、あとで思いついた。

By the mid-1980s, he was suffering severe depression and spent some time in hospital after coming near to suicide.

20年以上前の話やけど、バイト先の先輩が“Sophie’s Choice” を読んでいたのを思い出す。

“American Prometheus” はゆっくりとしか進んでいない。Oppie と一時期いい仲で、サイカイアトリストになったJean Tatlock は、自ら命を絶った。原因は不明だが、同性愛を苦にしたとの説もあるという。

… “‘Jean was Robert’s true love,’ a friend would later say. ‘He loved her the most. He was devoted to her.’” (p. 114)

“Some time after Jean’s death, one of her friends, Edith Arnstein Jenkins, went for a walk with Mason Roberson, an editor of People’ World. Roberson had known Jean well and he said that Jean had confided to him that she was a lesbian; she told Roberson that in an effort to overcome her attraction to women she ‘had slept with every ‘bull’ she could find. This prompted Jenkins to recall one occasion when she had entered the Shasta Road house on a weekend morning and seen Mary Ellen Washburn and Jean Tatlock ‘sitting up and smoking over the newspaper in Mary Ellen’s double bed.’ In remarks suggesting her perception of a lesbian relationship, Jenkins later wrote in her memoir that ‘Jean seemed to need Mary Ellen,’ and she quoted Washburn as saying, ‘When I first met Jean, I was put off by her [large] breasts and her thick ankles.’” (pp. 251-252)

Oppie = Bull???

当時57歳で「マンハッタン計画」に参加することになったデンマークの物理学者、Niels Bohr は戦後の核軍備の競争についてすでに警笛を鳴らしていた。それを防ぐには計画の存在をスターリンに明らかにし、ソ連を敵視していないことを伝えることが重要だと。ルーズベルトもチャーチルも同意する気はなかった。

ニカラグアの大統領選挙が始まった。

Daniel Ortega… 米誌を読み始めた80年代半ば、この人の名前が出てこない週はなかった。“Sandinista” 革命政権とその転覆を狙うゲリラ組織“Contra” による内戦。オルテガが返り咲いたら、Contra 兵士を“freedom fighters” と呼んだReagan は墓場でひっくり返ることだろう。

繰り返し夢に出てくる場面がある。また夢の中で夢だと気づいてる不思議。本や雑誌を読む時間を確保するために、新幹線で東京まで行ったり、予約なしで飛行機に飛び乗ってニューヨークまで行ったり……。
