Fatah+Israel+US, Pigeon, A-bomb, etc.

!!! “… [A]n unofficial alliance between Fatah, Israel and the United States has begun to consider a military way to force Hamas out.  In the name of ‘security reform’, America is financing a training camp outside Jericho for the Palestinians’ Force 17, a recruitment pool for the presidential guard.  Israel has sanctioned the transfer of heavier weapons and allowed Fatah’s Tanzim militia to rearm…” !!!  (The Economist, November 4th)

Daniel Ortega wins Nicaragua presidential election.
Republicans loses House majority in US.

“American Prometheus” は、重要な章(“Now We’re All Sons-of-Bitches”)に入った。

The fire bombing was no secret.  Ordinary Americans read about he raids in their newspapers.  Thoughtful people understood that strategic bombing of cities raised profound ethical questions.  “I remember Mr. Stimson [the secretary of war] saying to me,” Oppenheimer later remarked, “that he thought it appalling that there should be no protest over the air raids which we were conducting against Japan, which in the case of Tokyo led to such extraordinary heavy loss of life.  He didn’t say that the air strikes shouldn’t be carried on, but he did think there was something wrong with a country where no one questioned that…” (p. 293)

But [James F.] Byrnes was already beginning to think of the bomb as an American diplomatic weapon.  Running roughshod over Oppenheimer’s and Marshall’s arguments, the secretary of state-designate reinforced Lawrence by insisting that they had to “push ahead as fast as possible in [atomic] production and research and make certain that we stay ahead and at the same time make every effort to better our political relations with Russia.”  (p.295)

The Soviets would not be adequately informed about the Manhattan Project, and the bomb would be used on a Japanese city without warning.  (p. 297)
