Trần Lệ Xuân -- ドラゴン・レディー（１）

"Madame Nhu is perhaps one of the most tragic figures of our day and age....¹"

  「伝説のスパイ」などと呼ばれたりするエドワード・ランズデール（Edward Geary Lansdale）はこう表現している。その通りのような気がする。

　一九六三（昭和三十八）年十一月二日にクーデターで殺害されるまで九年間、ベトナム共和国の大統領に地位にあり、また日本との関係も浅からぬノ・ディン・ズィエム（Ngô Đình Diệm）^*の側近かつ実弟だったニュー（Ngô Đình Nhu）の妻、チャン・レ・スアン（Trần Lệ Xuân）。すなわち政権に抗議するために僧侶が焼身自殺したことについて、

"The only thing [the Buddhists] have done, they have barbecued one of their monks whom they have intoxicated, whom they have abused the confidence. Even that barbecuing was done not even with some self-sufficient means because they used imported gasoline.²"

と述べるなどして、何かと物議を醸した人である。しかし、このバーベキュー発言など、彼女の英語での発言は割り引いて考えた方がいい。クーデター直前のニューヨークでの講演で、彼女は檀上で会場からの質問を受けて同行していた長女のフランス語（とおそらくベトナム語）による通訳が必要だったのだから³。彼女の英語での発言をそのまま失礼極まりないものとだけ解釈するのは間違っているのかもしれない。ランズデールも、

"I think her talks about barbequing monks came as she was trying to use American slang with American reporters.... It was terribly out of place.⁴"

と述べている。

　チャン・レ・スアン。マダム・ニュー。ドラゴン・レディー。また、タイガー・レディー。彼女は国民議会議員でもあった時代にダンスや離婚を法律で禁止させた人でもあるが、それは結婚時に改宗したカトリックの信念を個人として国全体に反映させようとしたという側面もあるかもしれない一方、ベトナム皇帝の血を受け継ぐ良家に育ったが、日本軍にすり寄った父、別の形で日本に取り入った母に対する奥の深い反発心が思いがけなく権力の中枢に置かれてしまった結果、暴発したのではなかろうか。ハルバースタム（David Halberstam）は彼女の堂々とした何をも恐れない態度を、

"In contrast to Diem, who was shy and ill at ease in public, and Nhu, who often seemed indifferent, Madame Nhu had a zest for the ceremonies of leadership. She was the only one of the family who walked the way a dictator should walk - with flair and obvious enjoyment, trailed by a line of attendants - turning slowly first to the right, then to the left in acknowledging the crowd. It was always a virtuoso performance....⁵"

と皮肉まじりに評価している。
