Japanese Man Who Insists He Understands Latin

I know a Japanese man who spent seven years in the US to obtain a certification or degree, or whatever else, in some medical field in Iowa (refer to “Sophie’s Choice”) but is miserable when it comes to communicating in English. I am sure of the resentment he feels toward me. Eventually, the man started saying, “I know Latin,” with a straight face. Of course, there are Latin words still used for medical terms. Yet, everybody, except the man himself, knows being familiar with those terms does not mean at all that he understands the dead language. I’m sorry for him. How can I trust a person as a medical practitioner who got certified in the US and is so inept in English? Jejune, impossibly.
