Just outside of Paragon, a school band was playing this afternoon. It was a strong reminder of my high school days. Last Friday, inside the same building, I almost collided head-on with a “local celebrity,” Kym Ng. Years ago, she and news anchors, Suzanne Ho and Glenda Chong were among the first ladies I came to recognize on TV.

From “The Economist” (August 4th):
Arming its friends and talking peace
… Over the coming decade, [US] officials announced, America would be supplying them with some $63 billion worth of arms. The package included a 25% increase in military aid to Israel, raising its value from $2.4 billion a year to $3 billion, and a ten-year pledge to continue bolstering Egypt's military with an annual $1.3 billion in aid. More controversially, at least in the American Congress, the deal also included a planned $20 billion in weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the five smaller monarchies that face Iran across the Persian Gulf.
(Ha? Reading down to this part, I thought, sending more weapons should not be the way for peace in this inflammatory region. And then further down, I found this comment from the Syrian foreign minister.)
… Syria's foreign minister, Walid Muallem, said of the proposed arms transfers that supplying weapons was an odd way to achieve peace.
(This is quite true.)

The next morning, April 30 [1973], word came in slowly. There was a phone call from the Capitol Hill. Then, a tentative confirmation from a reporter at the White House. Bradlee came 0ut of his office to tell Woodward: It’s happening today. Four of them: Haldeman and Ehrlichman have resigned; Dean has been fired; Kleindienst has also resigned. Elliot Richardson is moving over from the Defense Department to become Attorney General… (“All the President’s Men,” p. 309)
