Sadat Introduced Mubarak to Kissinger

Then this afternoon, I encountered this passage in Page 415, “… for the first time, Sadat introduced his new Vice President, Hosni Mubarak, wearing a blue air force uniform. Though Mubarak did not play a major role in the dialogue, he was a necessary guarantor of the military establishment’s interests.”

President Mubarak is stepping down from office. I’m reading the “One Shuttle Too Many” part of “Years of Renewal.”

Lowering Language Hurdle Is Not the Answer

読売新聞のきょう（９日）の社説は「外国人看護師　日本語を非関税障壁にするな」として、「インドネシアやフィリピンにすれば、極端な（看護師試験）合格率の低さは、ＥＰＡで製品をどんどん売り込みながら、看護師らの受け入れは、日本語という“非関税障壁”でブロックしている『日本の身勝手さの象徴』と映るのではないか」と述べている。日本語での会話しかできない人びとの健康と生死を扱う看護師に言語能力を求めるのは当然だ。日本語が「障壁」になることなど、この制度の導入が検討されていた時点で明らかであるはずだった。制度を継続するつもりなら、日本語能力のハードルを下げるのではなく、期間を延長することが妥当な手段だと思える。

Egyptian Army Poised for a Coup?

Pro- and anti-Mubarak demonstrators clashed throwing stones at each other in the central part of Cairo. The Egyptian army is not taking any action. It seems to me that the army may be looking for the moment of a coup.
