"Outlined Details"? Oh No...

I came across this passage today: “It is important to go through all the details outlined…”

Outlined details?? If it’s only outlined, it can’t be details!! And you asked me to translate this into a coherent Japanese sentence?? I believe only people whose first language is English can write this kind of stupid sentences.

Should I have my hair cut….??? It’s been six months since the last haircut. But then… how about this maestro, here at his last concert at Tanglewood as Music Director?

"Gong Xi Ni" Song Again... and My First Class

Here we go again. This is the time of year when we are forced to hear that “恭嬉, 恭嬉, 恭嬉你” song. I can’t quite explain why, but I hate the song. It just irritates me. Is it because of the melody? Everywhere, it’s “♫ 恭嬉, 恭嬉, 恭嬉你”!! Who created the music???

*
This afternoon, I went to an extra class in Kallang where I and my classmates were supposed to observe a lesson to be conducted by a trainee teacher. It turned out that we, not yet teachers, would conduct the class!!

This has been my very first time to teach English in English. A nice experience, but I had great hesitation to sing a song… (I wish to have a higher voice. It’s not good to sing songs in a depressingly low voice in class, maybe unless I am a Zappa. Well, perhaps I should do some karaoke exercise.)

The students (we had three) are all from the mainland China. One of them really can’t count numbers in English! One hundred, two hundred… and ordinal numbers, first, second, third… This is exactly one of the situations where creativity counts to elicit just about anything from them. That’s the reality about mainlanders here, I guess. Although I know that I could have been more “uninhibited,” some nervousness crept into me…

As I recall the days when I was teaching in Japan, it is very important to connect with students. If I have a good rapport with them, it certainly facilitates for moving a class forward. It takes time, I know, to get to know the students. But it was fun today.

Yo, Man, Study More!

It seems that I should devote far more time to the TESOL course. While some assignments are fairly easy, others take substantial time to complete. Definitely, I must avoid a situation where assignments are piling up.

“Google AdSense” is quite funny and ludicrous. Now it is showing, 「冷却塔」「巨乳」「巨尻」「前田敦子」. I’ve never talked about any of them in my blog. And who is 前田敦子?

Remembering October 15, 1988

No Season, No Date

That there is no season is causing problems here, while I’m processing pictures. I try to bring up any memory to know when photos were taken when there are no dates specified. No change of clothing. No change of the color of the sky. It is often extremely hard, or simply impossible, to search and find any clue from images of any person or object in the photos as to when they were taken.

*
I attended the second workshop of TESOL today. Things are becoming a bit complicated and it shouldn’t be so easy to turn what I’m learning into something tangible that can be applied to the real situation, e.g. classrooms. The “the more bizarre you are, the better you are” principle was not something to be observed when I had a teaching job back in Japan.

Angela Asaoka

Vietnam or No Vietnam...

1st day of the TESOL (ESL) workshop. It was fun and interesting. The director told us that there are six positions immediately available in Vietnam. Here again, a few contradicting conditions are overlapping. Is it ok for me to go straight to Vietnam while having no bridge to return to Singapore? “A” suggested that I get PR status before going to Vietnam or anywhere. I would agree with him, but how is it possible? To get the status, I must be employed here first. Only then can I apply for it and it will prolong my day to go to Vietnam again. However, I can say that this trip of mine to HCM can be a life-changing event for me. And in many senses, it is already changing my life.

3 Nights in Ho Chi Minh

0:20 (Singapore time/23:20, January 5 in Vietnam time)

Thanks to an unexpected companion, I spent my very first night in HCM city just fine, though the taxi driver from the airport didn’t give the change and the hotel I had booked was mysteriously full, and I forgot to bring my glasses and the AC cord for the PC.

The city is quite vibrant with many shops, restaurants, cars and scooters, and it is rather dangerous to cross roads as there are few traffic lights.

I was transferred to another hotel. An auntie picked me up at the original hotel and she came by a scooter. Without a helmet, I rode with her to her hotel, which is located nearby.

I needed to get a bottle of solution liquid for my lenses because the one I’d had in my bag was confiscated at Changi. My companion brought me to a restaurant where I had beef “pho” for dinner, which was quite nice. After dinner, I had some beer and that’s all for my first night here.

23:05 (22:05 in Vietnam)

This afternoon, Oanh took me to two museums: War Remnants Museum and Ho Chi Minh City Museum. The War Remnants Museum was surprisingly modest built. And inside, I found some of the famous photos, which had been numerously reproduced, along with those jetfighters, a helicopter and a tank of the US armed forces. The City Museum displays exhibits including those of ancient times and the independence struggle against the French.

*
Later, Oanh showed me the suburban area. In District 7, I found the construction site of a “Lotte Mall” and an “International Exhibition and Convention Center.” In this area, the roads seem newly constructed and paved, and new blocks of apartments have gone up. We also passed the Saigon Port.

*
The city is clean. I can say that Ho Chi Minh is better managed than the dusty and dirty JB. The only nuisance may be hawkers selling guidebooks, Zippos, probably fake sunglasses and DVDs, and shoeshine boys.

My third and last night, Oanh showed me the city center, again by her scooter. We drove through Dongkhoi Street which was illuminated just like Orchard Road and the both sides of the road are lined with fancy hotels. Though I don’t know what sort of place it was… perhaps a disco or club, I saw bouncers in black. My impression is that HCM will surpass JB just in a few years.

*
My first and second nights, I had a very fitful sleep… with dreams wherein that despicably irresponsible man and my former boss appeared… It's incredible that they even followed me to HCM…

Med Fee over S$970...

I visited the clinic to pay for the tablets sent to me last month and asked if there was some misunderstanding over the bill I’d received from Mt. E Hospital. After all, there was nothing wrong about it, and I’ve settled the bill. Altogether, it went over S$970. To be exact, S$977.52. Oh no… Oh no!!

*
For the almost-forced-upon trip to HCM, I exchanged S$ for US$60. Probably not enough… Because it is very wasteful to change more into US$ and/or Vietnamese dong, if I didn’t need all and I need to change the surplus back to S$, I think I should bring some amount in S$. (But greenback notes in my hand, the very first time since 1993.)

Bad Sleep..., Nightmare, and a Call to Kyoto

Bad sleep. Two Epilim tablets didn’t work and a few hours later another tablet. The worst pattern… Before I fell into sleep, it was already past 7 am. And until late afternoon, a nightmarish dream.

Q came while I was still 90% slumbering. When I opened the fridge door after I finally got up, I found the bean sprouts I just had bought yesterday were gone. My bean sprouts…

*
Trying to be a good son, I called home. Not many important things to talk about, but it’s ok. At least I talked to her.

*
I printed out most pages of the materials for the ESL course. I’m not going to be so ambitious or optimistic but then of course I’d like to get respectable assessment.

New Year Opened, with Little Changed

A cool night.

After midnight, I went out to prove my positive existence and join some friends at CC. I had not visited there for some weeks. There was not a big crowd. As I had not had anything stronger than beer recently, gulping of shochu and champagne certainly affected me. In the taxi, coming back home, I almost puked a few times. Every time sweet champagne-taste puke came up from my stomach, I swallowed it down successfully.
